About this plugin

A docked Photoshop panel with two tools: the Rename Layers and Mark Duplicate Layer Names scripts, together. Select layers, type a name and choose Append, Prepend or Replace; tick Count to number them #1, #2, #3 from the top, or from the bottom. The panel shows the first new name and how many layers change before you press Rename. Mark finds every name used more than once, groups included if you like, across the document or only within the same group, ignoring case or spaces at the ends, and gives the extra copies a red color label, keeping the top-most copy, or the bottom one, as it is; Rename copies also renames them <name>_DUPLICATE. Check lists them without changing anything, and Unmark puts the old colors back. The report shows each duplicate and where every copy sits: click a row to select that layer, or a name to select all its copies, and save it as a text file. Every run is one history step, so one Undo reverts it, and the Background layer is never changed. For Photoshop 23.3 or later: double-click LayerNameTools.ccx and the Creative Cloud app installs it (confirm the warning for plugins from outside the Marketplace), then open it from Plugins > Layer Name Tools.

What it does

  • Renames every selected layer at once: append, prepend or replace
  • Count adds #1, #2, #3, from the top or from the bottom
  • Shows the first new name and how many layers change before you rename
  • Finds names used more than once, groups included, across the document or within the same group
  • Ignores case or spaces at the ends, if you like
  • Mark gives the extra copies a red color label; the top-most or the bottom copy stays as it is
  • Rename copies also renames them <name>_DUPLICATE
  • Check lists duplicates without changing anything; Unmark puts the old colors back
  • A report of every duplicate and where it sits: click to select a layer or all copies of a name
  • Saves the report as a text file
  • Every run is one history step: one Undo reverts it
  • Never changes the Background layer
  • Marks from the Mark Duplicate Layer Names script can be put back here, and the other way round
  • Docks as a panel in Photoshop 23.3 or later
